I took Sofie to the vet this morning and he put more stitches in and was able to wrap it with elasticon and tape. Then he wrapped her other foot as well, its torn open between the toes and one of the toenails was digging into the wound once in awhile when she stood up making her cry in pain. He was able to put some padding between the two so hopefully that will help. He gave her more previcox and antibiotic to help with the pain. My mom is making her a sling so we can put her stump in it so if she looses her balance there will be some cusioning for her. Now my only problem is getting her to take her pills, she is just too smart. I was putting them in a hot dog she caught on to that, then it was a pork chop, that was a one time thing. Then I put the pill in a dumpling (chicken and dumplings), and last night it was mashed potatoes and hambuger. I have more of that left so I’m going to try that again. Hopefully she will have a good day and night tonight.
Oh yes, the medication dance! I do this dance every day. Dakota has lupus, so he is on meds for the rest of his life. I hide the pills in all kinds of stuff. Scrambled eggs are popular I’ve heard. I also buy a bucket of chicken bouillon from Costco and make up a quart of broth to keep in the fridge. I warm it and pour a half cup or so over the food, pills included, and it’s usually effective.
I hope Sofie keeps doing well. It’s good that you’re being creative with how to handle her balance issues, but that will improve greatly very soon. I know it’s hard to believe looking at her now, but in a month she will move like she’s always been this way. Big dogs move slower, of course, and seem like they lumber along. But that’s part of their appeal, right? Big ol’ lovebugs!

Oh Sofie, we hope you feel better soon! That pill trick is pretty cool huh? It’s a great way to get lots of new yummy food from your people! 😉
Feel better soon, Sofie! And way to trick your people into feeding you lots of yummy treats. Cheese works pretty good, too. And wet dog food (the pate style, not the chunky/gravy kind) is good too.
Have you tried Extra Crunchy Peanut Butter? Zeus loves PB and with the extra crunchy kind, he can’t tell the difference between a pill and a peanut, so he just swallows it all. The sling sounds like a wonderful idea. Good luck!!
