Sofie has been having some sort of pain in her stump. It makes her cry out in pain and it happens when she is laying down especially at night, it happens every 2-3 hours. I rub her leg and it helps it, it almost seems like a cramp. Could it be a cramp or is it phantom pains, or could her back be out of place??? Sometimes her other hind leg wants to give out on her as well. Could this be stitches pulling, 2 days before the stitches were to be taken out, she fell and broke them open so I had to take her in and he put in more stitches then the vet also did a mattress stitch could that be the problem, could that be pulling somehow and giving her the pain. It just makes me sick that I don’t know how to help her anymore than massaging her leg.
It sounds like it might be phantom pain but if it started with the new stitches, maybe it is that. Either way, a call to the vet tomorrow is in order.
We all go through that horrible, helpless feeling during recovery. That’s why we call it “2 Weeks of Hell” – and that’s why we’re here. You may want to post your question in the forum, more people will see it and you’ll get more replies.
Roxy would occasionally cry out too. When it happened she would jump up, hold her stump out, and scream. Turned out it was phantom pain in her case. The vet gave her gabapentin. It seems like that’s a pretty common and effective drug for phantom pain. You may want to ask your vet about it and see if she thinks gabapentin would benefit your pup.
Be sure to post in the forums if you don’t get much feedback here. But Sophie’s sudden outbursts may indeed indicate phantom pain. Watch this video about common complications and download these tips to help manage phantom limb pain in dogs.
Please consult with your vet if you have any serious concerns. Hope this helps. Search the forums and blogs for more helpful advice!
we have no wisdom above what’s already been posted, but do hope you get some answers and sofie can find some relief.
